Is Myers Philadelphia's New "Answer"?

For the longest time in Philadelphia, Allen Iverson was "The Answer." Now, with the Phillies bullpen struggling, especially Brad "Lights Out" Lidge, the Phillies are in need of an answer that will propel them into October on a strong note.

Could it be that former Phillies closer Brett Myers is now ready to be the Answer? Phillies fans around the Delaware Valley and the country are hoping so. Myers is only three months removed from hip surgery. Most of the Phillies fanbase, and management included, thought Myer's year was finished after that pitch back on May 27th against the Florida Marlins. Darn those Marlins. They always seem to be the "thorn in the Phillies side," except this time it was Brett Myers side. Needless to say, this being a contract year, Brett was determined to rejoin the team this year.

So again, could his return be the answer the bullpen needs? It looks as if Brad Lidge is having a tough time going back to back nights and Myers' experience, and bulldog mentality could be that added edge we need. What would be wrong with "bullpen by committee"? We always seem to hear that saying when a closer goes on the disabled list. Why not go by committee from here on out to give the team the best advantage.

In his rehab starts, he compiled 7.0 innings pitched with a sub 2.00 era, 10 strikeouts 5 walks and only gave up 4 hits and 2 earned runs. He converted the save opportunity he had while closing for the Iron Pigs and was stellar in the other starts. Then, on September 5, that glimmer of hope, that possible "answer," came into focus. Brett took the mound in the 8th inning to preserve a lead for the Phillies over the Astros. His stats: 1.0 IP, 0H, 0R, 1BB, 0SO. Not too bad.

Maybe "The Answer" is now Brett.
